Enchondroma is a type of benign cartilage tumor that grows inside the bone.
Benign tumors such as enchondroma are fairly common. They usually occur in the small bones of the hands and the feet and the tumors themselves are not painful, symptoms associated with the deformed bone can be quite painful however. To the right, notice the deformation of the nail and inflamation of the cuticle due to the deformed bone mass.
The cause of enchondroma is not really clear, as enchondromas appear independent of chemical exposure, family history, exposure to radiation or patient activities. I guess if you are lucky, you just get one.
Often these tumors are completely painless, but they can deform and weaken the bone. Fractures are common in the infected bone, although the tumor itself doesn't hurt, I can tell you that the fractures do hurt considerably.
